Poverty: A Rising Epidemic. Will You Help?
Have you ever known someone who’s poverty stricken? Not one of your friends complaining of credit card debt, or about how high their mortgage payments have become. Have you ever known someone who can’t afford to eat? Someone who doesn’t have a roof over their head, or the ability to take a shower when they wish? Someone who’s often the victim of violence because they’re forced to live on unsafe streets? Chances are, you don’t. But just because we don’t personally know someone in these unfair circumstances shouldn’t mean that we ignore the problem. Extreme poverty is a global challenge, and is observed in all parts of the world, including developed economies. What can we do to help?
October 17th is identified as International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This day came to be back in 1987 when a man named Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World, gathered 100,000 people in from of the Liberties Plaza in Paris, France to honor the victims of poverty.
There are a variety of ways to lend your help on this day. One thing you can do that requires zero effort, is to donate your social media profiles to http://www.endpoverty2015.org/. Don’t know how? Visit their site at www.endpoverty2015.org and follow their instructions. The important thing is to spread awareness, get others involved, and work as a growing force to stop poverty once and for all. See what others are saying on Twitter #EndPoverty.
